Elements of Chance

Elements of Chance was composed for and premiered by the Lakehead University New Music Ensemble in December 1994.

This work involves several independent musical events played by the clarinet or alto sax, marimba and piano that take place against a recurring 12-note ostinato pattern played by the vibraphone. Each of the four sections of the piece undergoes modified repetitions controlled by the performers, who are given considerable freedom of choice regarding rhythm and pitches. This work is suitable for both university / high school students and professional musicians.
